Update: March 19th, 2020
Borders closed to foreign nationals and returning Ecuadorians
What is the change?
Vice President Otto Sonnenholzner announced significant travel restrictions to prevent further spread of COVID-19 earlier this week. As of Monday, Ecuador has closed its border to all inbound travelers, including returning Ecuadorians.
Key restrictions:
- International arrivals suspended. All inbound international travel has been suspended until April 5. Foreign nationals, as well as returning Ecuadorians, are unable to enter the country.
- Immigration services. Public offices are closed to public attention until March 24th. Pending applications are not being processed. We expect delays in every immigration process.
Ecuador is taking serious steps to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus that will have a significant impact on immigration and inbound travel. Employers should expect delays in immigration processing in the coming weeks. While the ban is in place for the next 21 days, it may be extended. Deloitte will continue to follow developments and alert clients of any changes.
