Immigration relief measures implemented
What is the change?
The Tanzania government recently implemented several immigration relief measures to assist non-citizen visitors during the COVID-19 situation.
Key points
- Potential visitors with Visa Grant Notices who have not been able to travel to Tanzania are granted a three-month visa extension to stay in the country until the COVID-19 situation has ended.
- Visitors with expired visas or passes, or ones that are going to expire, and who are unable to leave the country, can receive a free, one-month extension to remain. Such individuals are required to visit the nearest immigration office to receive the extension. If the COVID-19 situation continues and the one-month extension expires, it will be necessary to visit the immigration offices at Kurasini in Dar es Salaam to receive further instructions.
- A one-month grace period has been granted to remain in the country for non-citizen holders of expired resident permits, dependent passes and exemption certifications. If the COVID-19 situation continues and the one-month grace period expires, it will be necessary to visit the immigration offices at Kurasini in Dar es Salaam to receive further instructions.
- Non-citizens who have surrendered their residence permits/passes to the Immigration Services Department must immediately go to the immigration offices at Kurasini in Dar es Salaam to receive further instructions.
Foreign travelers and Tanzanian residents arriving from countries the most affected by COVID-19 will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine. One of the quarantine locations is the University of Dar es Salaam hostel (Magufuli hostel), which is currently being used as the government designated place for the 14 days.
The new immigration relief measures are intended to support non-citizen visitors during the COVID-19 situation. Depending on how it unfolds, there could be additional measures announced in the coming weeks. Employers should account for affected travelers and rearrange travel schedules accordingly.
